Kay Shofner is a Denver, Colorado native who has been committed to the woodworking crafts for over 50 years.

Beginning in architectural school, he has followed his love of creating things with wood. As a master cabinetmaker, Kay has built furniture, cabinetry, windows, and doors in his one-man shops in Denver, Steamboat, and Telluride. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts style, he has brought solid-wood character to the beautiful, older homes in the region.

Since 2017 Kay has fulfilled a dream of turning functional and artistic hollow forms on a lathe. As a woodturner, he coaxes out one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase the unique beauty of his medium – maple, elm, walnut, locust…

The wood Kay turns is sourced from dead trees cut down in the urban forests of Congress Park, one of Denver’s oldest tree-lined neighborhoods, and home to Ruelle Woodworks.

Kay is fascinated by the woodturning tools and techniques that have evolved over thousands of years, and capturing the essence of the craft.
