Spalting Gallery

Spalting is wood coloration caused by fungi, coveted by woodworkers throughout the centuries. “Blue stain fungi” commonly spalts pale hardwoods, like maple, bestowing blue, grey or black shadows that highlight the grain and add intensity to the piece. But, this prized feature can be tricky to turn – too much of a good thing can make the wood “punky” and vulnerable to breaking apart on the lathe.
